The Canary Islands have been attracting large numbers of tourists to their breathtaking shores for over four decades. It’s hard to see why anyone wouldn’t want to visit these perfect packages of paradise. Yet, even these holiday gems have been suffering during these difficult economic times. Throughout 2009, falling visitor numbers have been continually reported and as the crowds disappear the islands have seized this opportunity to undergo a refresh. It is hoped by all that this will encourage more visitors and stimulate the economy. In the meantime, holiday-makers who want to take advantage of reduced crowds and cheap Canaries hotels can do so now.
The Canary Islands, which include the popular Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, saw visitor numbers fall by around 15% in the first five months of 2009 compared with the same period in 2008, according to the BBC. An unfortunate combination of a weakening pound and the demise of certain major airlines and tour operators servicing the islands has contributed to the current problems.
The islands, however, have not been idle. Local authorities are taking decisive action in the form of public investment of up to 120 million euros over the next four years to give the islands a ‘facelift’. They are not alone in their action, either. Hotels are working hard to improve their facilities and services in anticipation of busier times. This form of reinvention has been identified as one way to combat the recent troubles and help the Canaries get back on track as a top holiday destination.
Future visitors to the islands will have the chance to benefit from these efforts. In the meantime, holiday-makers can enjoy deals on Canaries hotels that are as low as £15 per person per night for a two person self catering apartment in Playa De Las Americas, Tenerife – and enjoy a more peaceful holiday experience at the same time.
